Woombye started life as a Cobb & Co coach stop on the road to the Gympie goldfields, and it grew into a produce and railway town once the line through the hinterland opened in 1891, the same railway that let Thomas Davey plant the district's first commercial pineapples here in 1895. That fruit-growing history, still visible in the Big Pineapple down the road, means plenty of local blocks carry stumps from old pineapple rows, citrus plantings or windbreak trees that have outlived the crop they were planted alongside. Stump grinding in Woombye covers both the compact township blocks near the historic centre and the rural-residential acreage of West Woombye, so access and equipment choice vary block to block.
Woombye's identity is tied to fruit and rail. It was first known as Cobb's Camp, a Cobb & Co staging post established not long after the Gympie gold rush in 1867, and was surveyed and renamed Woombye in 1889. The railway that followed in 1891 made the town the produce centre for Buderim's farmers, and Thomas Davey's first commercial pineapple plantings here in 1895 set the district on a path that eventually gave Queensland the Big Pineapple in 1971. For stump grinding, that history means blocks around the old township and out toward West Woombye often carry more than one generation of fruit-growing stumps, sitting in foothill soils that hold roots deeper than flat coastal ground.
It's why landholders clearing old fruit rows and homeowners in the historic township both call Woombye's stump grinding job in to us rather than leaving a dying patch to keep spreading.

emergency tree servicesWoombye's history runs from coach stop to fruit capital. Originally known as Middle Camp and then Cobb's Camp after the Cobb & Co coaches that ran between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields from 1868, it was surveyed and renamed Woombye in 1889 to settle confusion with other similarly named places; the name itself comes from a local Aboriginal word, thought to refer to the black myrtle or lily pilly tree once used for axe handles. The Landsborough-to-Yandina railway reached Woombye in 1891 and made it the main produce outlet for Buderim's farmers until 1914, with Thomas Davey planting the district's first commercial pineapples here in 1895 and a pulping plant following in 1921.
That century of fruit farming is why so many Woombye blocks still carry legacy stumps: old pineapple rows, citrus plantings and windbreak trees that outlived the crop around them. The Big Pineapple itself, opened in 1971 and now Queensland Heritage-listed, sits just down the road as a reminder of how central that industry was to the town. Population here actually declined for a time once the fruit industry struggled after the Second World War, which means some blocks around the historic centre carry older, more established trees than you'd find in a newer development.
Woombye splits roughly into two zones for our purposes: the compact, older township blocks near the historic centre and the railway line, and the rural-residential acreage of West Woombye stretching out toward Dulong and Towen Mountain. Foothill soils here hold moisture and let roots run deeper than flat coastal sand, so a stump that looks modest on the surface can still need a deeper grind than expected, particularly on an old fruit row where multiple root systems have grown into each other over the decades.
Woombye sits right next to Palmwoods and a short drive from Nambour, so stump grinding here is often booked alongside a nearby job. Choose the closest area below, or head to our Sunshine Coast tree services hub.
Yes, it's one of the more common jobs we do around Woombye given the district's farming history. Multiple stumps on one property are cheaper per stump than a single call-out, so send us a rough count or photo of the row and we'll quote it as one job.
Almost certainly. Woombye's historic-centre blocks tend to be smaller, older lots, and we bring compact grinders suited to narrow side access and established gardens rather than oversized machinery built for acreage.
Mainly access and visibility: commercial frontage blocks sometimes need work scheduled around trading hours or customer parking, which we're happy to plan around. The grinding itself follows the same process as any other Woombye job.
Mainly scale. West Woombye blocks often have multiple stumps spread across a paddock or old orchard row and room for bigger equipment, while in-town jobs are usually one or two stumps in a tighter garden. We quote each according to stump count and access rather than a flat rate.
If you want it, yes: pineapple, citrus and shade-tree grindings make good mulch for the next planting, and leaving it on site avoids tipping fees. If you'd rather it gone, we remove it and price that into the quote.
Woombye is on our regular hinterland route, so routine work is usually scheduled within the week. Cost depends on stump diameter, species and access; quotes are free and itemised before booking. Call 0409 491 683 directly for storm damage.
Woombye began as Cobb's Camp, a Cobb & Co coach-staging point on the road from Brisbane to the Gympie goldfields, established not long after the 1867 gold rush. It was surveyed as a township and renamed Woombye in 1889, a name thought to come from a local Aboriginal word for the black myrtle or lily pilly tree. The North Coast railway reached town in 1891, making Woombye the produce outlet for Buderim's farmers until a dedicated Buderim line opened in 1914, and Thomas Davey's pioneering pineapple plantings here in 1895 set the district's future course. The Big Pineapple opened in 1971 and is now Queensland Heritage-listed, standing as the town's best-known landmark today.
