Landsborough has been settled since the 1870s, first as a Cobb & Co coach stop called Mellum Creek, then as a railway town once the North Coast line arrived in 1890, and the timber-getting and farming that built the district left plenty of established trees across its older blocks. Stump grinding in Landsborough today covers a historic town centre with small, older residential lots, plus a rural-residential fringe toward Mount Mellum and Mooloolah Valley with larger acreage and more established hardwood growth. Because the district was logged and farmed for well over a century before most of today's housing went in, mature root systems are more common here than in a newer suburb.
Landsborough is one of the hinterland's older towns, settled from 1871 as Mellum Creek and renamed in the 1890s after explorer William Landsborough, once the North Coast railway arrived and pulled the town centre toward the new line. It was the seat of the old Landsborough Shire (covering Caloundra, Maleny and Beerburrum) until that council was renamed Caloundra City in 1987, and the original shire offices are now the Landsborough Museum. That long settlement history, built first on timber-getting and then sugar, pineapples and dairy, means Landsborough's older blocks often carry mature hardwood stumps that a newer suburb simply wouldn't have.
That's why homeowners in the historic town centre and landholders out toward Mount Mellum both call on us for a job that often involves bigger, older timber than you'd find in a newer Sunshine Coast suburb.

emergency tree servicesLandsborough began as Mellum Creek, settled in 1871 by Isaac Burgess, whose homestead became a Cobb & Co coach-staging post on the road to the Gympie goldfields. The town was renamed Landsborough and pulled eastward toward the new North Coast railway line when it arrived in 1890: the Mellum Club Hotel was even physically relocated in 1914 to chase the rail trade. The district's economy moved through timber-getting, sugar cane, pineapples, bananas and dairy over the following decades, and Landsborough served as the seat of the old Landsborough Shire (which covered Caloundra, Maleny and Beerburrum) until the council was renamed Caloundra City in 1987.
All of that history means Landsborough's trees have had a long time to establish. Hardwood timber-getting was the district's first industry, and many of the eucalypts and other hardwoods on older blocks and surrounding acreage are genuinely mature specimens with large, deep root systems, a different proposition to grinding a stump in a suburb that's only existed for twenty or thirty years. The compact, well-preserved town centre near the historic railway station and the Landsborough Museum sits alongside a rural-residential fringe toward Mount Mellum and Mooloolah Valley, where blocks are bigger and the tree cover more established still.
The commuter rail service that's run from Landsborough since 2004 has brought newer residents into some of these older blocks, often inheriting a mature tree or stump they didn't plant and don't necessarily know the history of. We assess species, age and root spread properly before quoting, because a hardwood stump that's been growing for decades needs a different approach, and usually more time, than a young tree from a recent planting.
Landsborough sits right next to Beerwah, so stump grinding in the two towns is often booked together. Choose the closest area below, or head to our Sunshine Coast tree services hub.
Because the district has been settled and timbered for well over a century, a lot of local stumps are genuinely mature hardwood with large, deep root systems, a different job to a young tree from a recent housing estate. We size the quote to the stump's real age and species, not just its trunk diameter.
Yes, Landsborough's historic centre has smaller, older blocks and established gardens, so we bring equipment suited to narrow access and work carefully around heritage-era structures and plantings.
Yes, and it's more cost-effective than separate visits. Tell us the approximate number and species if you know them, and we'll quote the whole job as one visit.
We take extra care around heritage-listed structures and will flag if a job looks like it might need council input, but otherwise the grinding itself follows our usual process.
If you'd like it: hardwood grindings make particularly long-lasting mulch, which suits Landsborough's many established acreage gardens. We can also remove it if you'd rather the block left clear.
Landsborough is on our regular hinterland route, so routine jobs are usually scheduled within the week. Cost depends on stump diameter, species and access, and mature hardwood stumps typically take longer than younger ones. Quotes are free and itemised before booking.
